Sodium tert-butoxide is a white to off-white crystalline solid, a strong alkaline organometallic reagent. It is highly hygroscopic, flammable, and reacts violently with water, acids, oxidizing agents. Must be stored and transported under inert gas protection.

Used as an intermediate in organic synthesis and pharmaceutical synthesis.

As a strong base, it is widely used in condensation, rearrangement, ring-opening and other reactions in organic synthesis for chemical, pharmaceutical and pesticide industries.
